Own TAG, is it worth it? Any recommendations?

Currently have circa 150 domain names, mostly .co.uk & .uk with some .com and a few others.

Need a system with hosting, email client and landing/holding page all integrated.

My knowledge is intermediate and currently use IONOS and GoDaddy but wish to move away from them both. Transfer domains as they come up for renewal and transfer business email at a quiet time of year to minimise disruption.

Netistar and Cloudflare have been recommended but not sure they have everything I need, may also look for someone with more knowledge in the UK to manage.

Any advice appreciated!

The maths will probably work in your favour.

Initial setup £400+ vat, £100 a year fee.

150 domains @ £3.90 with Nominet is £585 a year. If your paying say 7 or 8 quid a year currently , by year two you'll be saving a fair bit. Once your set up its all pretty straight forward. The only disadvantage is a lack of any control panel to handle any nameserver changes etc. You'll need to do all that externally. I use cloudflare... free ... and awesome.

Nominet give you a control panel where you can manage domains on your tag. You can change nameservers there.
Sorry, I should have been clearer. ..... that is of course true. But its literally just point and go for nameservers isn't it ? You cant set up any extra subdomains, A records or anything like that can you ?

No, you're right, the domain has to be hosted where you can change those details on the hosting zone files or use an external service like you said.

Hi,

Owning your own TAG can definitely be a good move, especially if you’re looking for more control over your .uk domains.

However, it’s important to understand that having a TAG on its own isn’t enough to fully manage everything efficiently, particularly if you’re aiming for automation, scaling, or tighter control over your portfolio.

To really benefit, you would typically need to apply to become a Nominet member. This involves paying an initial joining fee along with an annual membership fee.

The advantage is that you gain access to wholesale pricing, better control over domain operations, and additional tools and privileges that aren’t available to standard registrants.

On the infrastructure side, if you're looking for hosting, email, and landing pages all in one place, there isn’t a single perfect provider that excels at everything. Many professionals end up separating these layers:

Use a registrar (or your own TAG) strictly for domain control.
Use Cloudflare for DNS, security, and basic edge features.

Use a dedicated hosting provider or VPS for websites.

Use a specialized email provider for reliability.

Given your intermediate level and current portfolio size (~150 domains), moving away from IONOS and GoDaddy makes sense, but I’d recommend doing it gradually as you mentioned.

If you plan to grow further or optimize costs, going the TAG + Nominet membership route becomes more worthwhile.

If you’re not planning to scale significantly, a well-structured setup with a solid registrar + Cloudflare + external email/hosting might be simpler and more cost-effective.
