seems like many members took plunge and moved, plenty to spain. have to say all things considered one of best places if choosing right spot

Lee and Prodomains can you tell more about what inspired move and why you chose particular spot?

Im not best to answer this, I have not moved full time to Spain, I go out every six weeks or so for a week as I work shifts in my full time job. (14 days off a month). I can't ever see myself wishing to live in a foreign country full time.

I have children who I work daily to build a future for. I also have a large family with 7 brothers and sisters. I cant see any reason for wishing to move away from that.

Were not living in the expart part of Spain unfortunally.. I do miss my Dutch bars, food and being able to speak Dutch and the same goes for my gf who would kill someone to shop in Tesco for a few mins but rural Spain has it advantages.. I just went to my local to watch Barca-Milan and had 5 1/2 liters of Heineken, 2 chicken sandwiches and a tapa for 10 Euro :D

Don't apologise Sean, I read your post several times yesterday, without knowing how to, or how best to respond. Your summary puts a lot of the thinking of living-abroad as a 'utopian' solution into perspective.

Your comments about the Swedish mind-set are an insight that you could only become aware of by living in the Community (or not such a community, given your experience)

My daughter is happily settled in Melbourne, Australia. (supposedly the best place/city in the world to live) But, I can give you dozens of reasons, from an outsiders perspective why you wouldn't want to exchange any UK city your presently living in to go and live there
 
Likewise sorry to hear your story Sean, hope things turn out better for you. Out of interest, why did you choose Sweden? Was it inspired by a holiday there or something? Just curious as it's not usually top of people's places to live when they go for the dream ,it's usually Miami or Costa Del Sol....

thanks so much for going into details about your experiences Sean

first off what i take from it is you and your wife must have a very strong realtionship to try it, go through it and come out other side
also how close you are to your daughter, escorting her home and doing full round trip

all this is priceless, far more important than even the trip being a paradise or money

as far as finances, you have enough great domains, a few back to back sales enduser style is all it takes

I have been sweden many times and love it, but I notice you say being winter person, I'm very much not , not sun worshipper either but summers in sweden are glorious and they love their summers

you're right is a myth about sweden people think is land of milk and honey but have their own problems and do lack compassion
they're not big animal lovers like us for example, can tell a story later to perfectly show that

I used to live with my swedish gf, was going to move out there many moons ago

I would still holiday there, again summer, cabin near the lake

see the problem in uk it is SO damn expensiv e and all the land is owned by royalty, rich landowners, planning laws are so draconian it is not an option for an average person to have a summer house
that would releive a lot of tensions in p[eoples everyday lives in uk

POOR people this is standard to have this in many countries

go to ukraine, they all have dachas, some tumbledown, but pretty much your average working clas sperosn has a little cottage

as much as we knock it uk is deffo in top 10 places to live in world, but I am incredibly concerned where its going

the best option again is to travel a lot and take long holidays in wonderful places , however this isn't an option for most, because of work or MONEY

so many take the plunge, have to, and sell up and go

end of the day, it takes a lot of bravery, most will never do it
even if it doesnt work out, you still did it mate

@Pred I'm also interested in NZ, have always been allured there for some reason, had a close friend who went there for a month and he is also thinking of moving out there.

Title of the thread "Perfect & dream"... goes to show nothings' perfect and dreams can be very different in reality. Having the courage to just do it is 1000x better than wishing, dreaming, or thinking about it though!

I was reading back through this thread and this comment from Pred basically sums it up for me and that's what I love about Greece.

Although I am slightly inland it takes me about 5 minutes on my scooter or car to get down to the sea. Last week we had our first 'warm' evening after a fairly cold winter (for here), so I decided to head down and meet a Greek friend for a beer.

We sat there with our beers and the taverna owner brought out some bowls with olives, feta cheese and nuts, which they often do. You could see the mountainous coastline of Turkey for miles and the whole of the Aegean sea seemed golden as the sun went down. It looked amazing. I don't know what its like to be a millionaire, but for me little times like that are worth a million dollars.
 
I think it depends on your circumstances. If you've got a family to uproot then obviously it makes things much harder.

If you're a single lad though I couldn't recommend Asia enough. Singapore is AMAZING if you are doing OK moneywise and Thailand is a great place if you choose the right spot. The weather is awesome, women aren't up their arses like they are in the UK, it's cheap (but becoming less so because of the weakening pound) and the nightlife is great (clubs stay open til 6 (if they've paid the police off!))....... there are of course negatives - it's pretty dodgy, everything on tv looks like its taken its inspiration from Benny Hill and the men are 'tudey' as fook.

If you prefer somewhere closer to home then my vote would go to the Algarve, where I hope to end up in a few years time.

Sean, sorry to hear about the bad experiences. Sounds like you couldn't have had it much worse mate.

Being a "millionaire" is just a concept. Unless you take real risks with your money, it won't even lift you into a particularly comfortable lifestyle since you can probably get 2% at best off a savings account if you're looking for "safe" investments, which translates to £20,000/year. You've then got to pay tax on the interest. You won't be poor, but you certainly won't be rich!

It's all about sustainable cashflow i.e. revenue streams. For example, if you have X (whatever X is) that throws off £30K/year pretty much like clockwork, then you'll be able to afford a much more comfortable day-to-day lifestyle than the millionaire next door, even if you have little/no savings of your own. The closer the revenue streams come to being totally hands-off/automated, the more like a "millionaire lifestyle" it will feel.
