Today all my PR0 thin affiliate sites dropped in SERPs like lead balloons!

Sites were on different dates between jan-mar this year. PR is taken care of but not yet acquired. This usually happens within 1-2 weeks of the update. So watch the big G. ;)

irrelevant.... unless you are selling text link advertising based on your PR.

Irrelevant to what? The section is called “Domain Traffic…”, and my post is about the domain traffic for PR0, which has dropped (not only for me, I believe) and I explain why… So what is irrelevant?

I do not sell PR links, never thought about it...

There is a definite move away on the side of google from pushing pr as something that's important or relevant. They have already removed the PageRank section in the crawl statistics in Google Webmaster Tools. It's likely only still around at all because it is Larry Page's baby.

I've seen a good few link buyers move away from pagerank totally, and make accessments based on things like mozrank, or simply the amount of time a site has been up, backlink totals and whatnot. It's positive, I feel that not everyone is looking out for exactly the same thing,

That said, a decent proportion of people do still pay attention to it, for textlink buying purposes and even link exchanges, so if a site moved from pr2 to 4-5 for instance, it would be something I'd welcome. Thanks expertc for letting us know about this. I'll keep an eye out for any changes :). It'll be interesting to see who benefits from the update.

You're welcome! I have noticed that PR0 always nosedive before the update. But PR is still relevant to affiliates as PR2 takes their sites out off the duplicate (supplemental) content back to the top. This is even true for thinnest affiliate shops with “borrowed” content. ;)

Yes, it can certainly be an indicator of a number of things, such as that, and whether a site has been penalised for one reason or another. What is seen as an impressive PR rank around these parts?

note to expertc

It would great if you posted again once you see some PR appear on the sites that you mentioned. that way we can see how long it took.

Interesting. I had a personal site nosedive since the 1st of March (traffic is down 75%!) - is this likely to change once there is an update?

Page Rank

I don't think the webmaster central installation of PR distribution ever worked as they intended it too.

If you are struggling to get all of your content indexed getting more PR will be an issue for you.

I find a lot of the people who email me about buying links couldn't pick the best position on a site to get a link if their life depended on it. They obsess about the homepage, the footer and page rank, what about in context, what about history? Ps i don't sell/buy links but i could certainly show a few of them what they should be looking for when they do buy links!

Just to clarify, it's not that I think the measured used to determine google pr are unsound, it's more that I question whether them being available publicly is a good thing all in all.

I agree about people emailing in relation to links (being their intention is to buy or exchange links). I peformed a link exchange with a sports site whose domain cost them a pretty penny. They wanted me to use the plain URL, and didn't seem concerned about the lack of anchor text at all.

I will keep you posted about the PR update. I expect the update for PR0-PR1 sites to be before the end of the month.

PR is a complex issue, but for thin affiliate shops on borrowed content it simply puts the shop on the first page. This is why for many affiliate marketing people it’s important.

Thanks expertc. Over what period of time does the update typically roll out? For sites with PR already, not PR0 sites.

From my experience if site is PR2 and above the rank changes overnight for all sites. For PR0-PR1 change is gradual (e.g. takes a week to cover all). Probably it depends on number of sites, like there are much more PR0-PR1 sites than PR2 and higher.

Yes! The update happened today! All my affiliate sites are now PR3 ;)
