In terms of red wine Pinot Noir from Chile has been a favourite recently
A nice drop. Chilean Malbec is also good. Which other red wines would you recommend

I love red wine, but I'm not an expert and usually forget what I've had and what I like. I just let the missus choose, she likes to think herself an expert.

Agreed - IMO it costs 5 quid for a crap bottle of wine, yet you can get a fairly decent bottle of red for 11 or 12 quid. Better to drink quality less frequently if money is the concern. Then you're spending just the same.
A nice cab sav or a Barolo and you can't go wrong, the latter being my personal favourite.
If it's sunny out I prefer to drink white wine. A chilled Sancerre goes down very well on it's own, but even better with seafood. It's a very dry wine though. I cant get away with any medium or sweet white wines.
I'm no expert on wines, but I reckon there's a lot of bollocks talked about wine. Try a few recommendations and when you find a few you like then you're as qualified as you need to be.

Yeah, sancerre and pouille fume / pouilly fuse are really great white wines. About £12 a bottle I guess on average.
... and what about champagne? I reckon the best value-for-money champagne is try Perrier Jouet, about £25 a bottle. It's lovely stuff. And if you want a fantastic bottle for Christmas, try Perrier Jouet Belle Epoque (about £100)... better than Bollinger!

Any £10 or more bottle of Rioja or Chianti from Laithwaites will see you right. No point spending more than that unless you plan on only having a glass at a time... and who does that :|

I like faustino IV and like Barolo or chateau Neuf but usually a white wine drinker. White i'm not too fussy as long as it's dry but red I seem to only like the expensive ones.
Once you step up a price bracket you'll probably not turn back.
I did it with brandy, I was happy with my cheapo napoleon formaldahyde mix until someone bought me a bottle of XO.
You would be surprised but Tesco Finest Premier Cru is a very good champagne for ~£15
