I hate football, but there is no denying that Rooney's goal today in the Manchester derby was sensational

Not long after he scored, this is what Google was suggesting people were looking for, just from typing 'Rooney'

Amazing !

So its an automatic process which picks up commonly occuring searches. I just typed in a search that I and a few others must have been typing in, for a pretty unique phrase and its in there...

Perhaps this could be manipulated?

Yes it can be manipulated - I'm not sure how well it could be automated though. Google could easily ignore multiple searches from the one IP, or even ignore every search that didn't originate from a logged in Google user.

I'm unsure on the volume you'd need to manipulate it, but one guaranteed way to do it would be by getting everyone on a popular forum to search Google for the same phrase.

Maybe Acorn users could influence a small volume search phrase, but I doubt they could deliberately alter a Rooney related one.

Perhaps we should do a test and start searching for something really obscure and see if it will show up...
