Tag Holder VERSUS "man on the street"

Hello

I am trying to estimate whether there is a large time difference
between someone who has a TAG and the "man on the street"
in terms of the time from knowing when a domain is released to
an email request being sent to Nominet to register the domain.
I have to rely on using a Registrar and that may make all the difference,
I guess ??

Any ideas on this ?.

A fast response to register a name (when a Whois lookup shows it has been dropped) is significant. An automated system has a great advantage over manual monitoring and manual registration attempts. A "man in the street" has virtually no chance of catching a name, unless none of the automated systems are after it.

To make matters even worse for the "man in the street", Tag holders have the option to send speculative emails in anticipation of a name being dropped.

You are right Keys but I would add that even with a Tag, it is no guarantee of getting the decent names as loads of other tags are all after the same name, all with their own automated systems.

Even so, SOME chance with a Tag is better than NO chance without.

Hmm. Look this is'nt sour grapes or jealousy because that is a waste
of time, but is it right that such a large proportion of the best names are
in the hands of a very few who a few years ago got their own tag and
registered them ?. Just strike me that the role of Nominet is to ensure
a fair system and what we have is not fair to all and prefers their own members to the man on the street ?. Just my thoughts

This argument has raged for years where .com names are concerned and the WLS (wait list service) whereby you stuck your name on a list in anticipation of being first in the queue was supposed to help the "man in the street".

I think the current system is as fair as it can be. If you really, badly want some good names then get a script developed for your own use.

In reality like you first said the quality names go to those with the fastest scripts and the scraps are fought over by the rest.

Having said that, you only need one name to develop a website and make a lot of money - sure the effort is a lot more than simply trading a name but the payback is over a much longer period.

People who are willing and able to apply significant resources will always do better than small speculators. The goldrush for .co.uk domains is over, the opportununity to make money from catching names is now common knowledge.

The fast scripts are losing thier edge, and will get their wings clipped further from 5 January. The competition now, is more from the shear number of players with Tags, this inevitably means that many names which would have been left after a drop a few months ago are now being caught by automated systems.

Even if Nominet introduce a WLS, those with the deepest pockets will get the best names.

I think my New Year's resolution should be to stop wasting time and effort trying to catch more names, but this is an addicitive game, and there are still some very tempting names being suspended.

I think you will find that the majority of TAG holders were "man on the street" untill they decided to go and get a TAG.. even then as stated above a TAG isnt some magical ticket that guarantee's you a name.
