So hang on a minute let's just drop thsi in to the equation as well - when .UK isn't exactly hitting the mark.

So are they saying that Wales is not part of the UK - or just that they may as well throw in some more ways to make cash.

Agree but one simple point of connection to .uk.

In the Wales Nominet site:

We are campaigning for both bids to be considered as a pair; not as two separate applications.

Yet .uk and .co.uk for business are regarded as 2 seperate tld's for UK businesses by Nominet?

With 2 different owners of .co.uk and .uk with undeveloped websites neither may wish to commit the monies to develop the site as the other could get the traffic in error with such similar names and neither will know which domain becomes superior, for several years and nobody wants to build a site which will become seen as inferior due to the domain name tld.

So little development will get done where the same domain for .uk and .co.uk is owned by 2 different owners and so the UK namespace will stagnate website development, not charge forward as envisaged by Nominet.

People will still acquire the .uk and .co.uk with a long term viewpoint but no real significant development of websites will take place unless both the .uk and .co.uk are owned.

Yes, which will be all the more reason to invest, build and develop sites on .com. Thanks Nominet

Maybe you guys need to make infographics with attention grabbing headlines for the main reasons direct.uk will be bad.. with a sentence and some bullet point underneath. If not that, just anything that delivers the info in a precise way.

Stuff like "Nominet To Allow Your Websites Traffic And Customers To Be Hijacked".

Because I do honestly think the past majority of people need information in short bite size pieces to digest it, otherwise they quickly lose interest, stop listening and won't care..

The current information you guys seem to be putting out is obviously very detailed, great, but there needs to be some catchy short pieces of information to get people interested enough to actually read them.

I think that's what Nominet is hoping for, in that, they put across the appeal of having a .uk but do not disclose the train wreck that will ensue.

Thanks for that. I have shown my document "What's wrong with the Nominet .uk proposal?"
to many people, all find different consequences more disturbing than others.

The main ones are how can Nominet do this without consulting the UK domain owners?
and how much money it will cost to businesses!

The more feedback received, the more focused you can make the aurgument and I hope that the documnet
can be like a pool of aurguments that can be dipped into depending
on who you are addressing.

But anybody would like to put some time in and provide a summary, that would most welcome.

In sending out to MP's yesterday and a few business contacts, I added in the covering :

As you may (or not) be aware Nominet intends to launch a new domain extension “.uk” next spring
as the principal business domain name in the UK, so effectively replacing .co.uk domains.

To help get them to even look at it!

According to the FOI by Angus Hanton to Ministers. Nominet haven't bothered to tell the Government about the sunrise phase...... Ministers know nothing about it.

Nominet don't have the power to do this, it's just at which point do they get found out. Ministers will instantly shut down the proposal in my opinion.

Can you imagine British TM holders being on the same footing at US, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand TM holders and needing to go to auction..... That's before you get to 99% of the unregistered rights holders going head to head at auction.

Just moving servers from one data centre to another that promised not to take down the sites on what Nominet have threatened to do to my last Data centre. Unfortunately our last data centre was intimidated into taking down our servers unless we complied. As we have told Nominet, we will only comply with Courts of Law.

Should be back up in the next hour or two, doing some tiny configs at minute.

Or has it just been a promotion and option to discuss?

I know there are lots of negatives as discussed in this thread but have nominet actually mentioned them anywhere?

I'm thinking about all the current registrants that have domains ending UK or CO. will be a nightmare.

Will geo sites/names be worthless as towns themselves will get 1st dibs and universities, schools with AC.UK etc claim them all.

It's strange that now, just when the co.uk has gained most public consciousness that change is proposed.
In recent years, unlike in past years, businesses have become aware of the potential of offline advertising for their online presence.
Take this company 700700 co uk they have embraced the whole co.uk internet thing, they have used ingenuity in coupling their phone number and website address, they have branded very heavily, if you go to YELL .com and put 700700 in and the area they cover it displays their details.
700700 co uk is plastered over all their vehicles and they have, I expect, invested heavily in what is, let's face it, a gamble. There is no inherent value in this name it is not resellable or trademarkable it only contains expense and investment and a whole lot of trust in the co.uk domain system.
Marketing, particularly internet marketing like legal and accountancy requires expert advice and therefore is not cheap, so wouldn't it be only fair to let this business just get on with it, and not reward their ingenuity and industry by piling expense and confusion onto them through the introduction of dot uk

afterthought... I expect they could just register 700700.co and simply paint out the UK....CHARMING.

Well i must say the Manchester round table meeting , was a much more
interesting meeting to attend , parts of senior management we in attendance answered to there best of there abilities questions
actually listened and were open to points of discussion , regarding
objections , and potential problems ,
i was impressed with there how competent there were and also a passion for internet , i feel they have being wrongly directed and are just doing there jobs , this team can run NOMINET and make us all proud , however i think there are to scared to disagree with there chief exec, after all look how there chief exec , has treated previous member's of her team , i mean who would really try too raise the .uk after i find it has already been discussed many times and always been rejected
what idiot would try to implement such a thing when the country is in its worst state for a long long time , after the internet economy was struck by panda / penguin what buffon would seek to further undermine it by
creating confusion causing great financial loss to the digital assets market place values that have fallen greatly recently as the market is looking for some clear direction and not getting it , and also this baffon is causing people not to renew there subscriptions there nominets income is down she is the epitome of a stupid greedy banker who does not give a flying f***k

we need confidence to return , not only us , NOMINET needs it to as renewals are down there , if this was my company i would have to ask if the Chief Executive was a negative impact on earnings and confidence

We're looking at the UK equivalent of president Marbarak, thankfully without the headcount. However, the end result is similar.

Being, "I know what looked good for me yesterday - And I've set a course -Any deviation is an invite to a perceived 'personal weakness/catastrophe', which IMHO is far worse an outcome than even a total Collapse of the UK domain name system as a whole. Savvy ?
