Can anyone recommend WordPress hosting, preferably on UK servers?

Although I've worked with WP for clients over the past couple of years, I'm only just about to launch my first WP site. I installed it on 1and1 shared hosting and it's really slow, and that's before I've added any plugins.

Can anyone recommend anywhere? What's the difference between "WordPress Hosting" and regular hosting? Do I need a VPS or will shared hosting be sufficient?

I don't do wordpress but i have recommended the below to 4 different wordpress site owners. All moved and are happy. (also 1 large joomla site)

They only do CMS hosting. (joomla, drupal and wordpress)

I have had to contact their support 3 times and all times i had a reply within 20 mins.

Twice daily back ups as well.

Get your own server mate, not difficult and reasonably cheap. You'll never look back and has great seo benefits not being on servers with porn sites and spam bots and stuff.

Shared hosting should be sufficient for the average Wordpress blog. If your experiencing high traffic, and in turn .. lots of lag then I would aim for a VPS.

Agree if you have a few 'sites'

Any 'normal' hosting will be fine as long as it's got a MySQL database and can run PHP.

Shared hosting is all you need unless you expect to have 10000+ views a day and/or a incredibly query heavy setup.

I think people are just like I was, scared and worried about the difficulty or stuff. But great people on here that helped me out and best thing I ever did. So doesn't even need to be managed. Especially as like you said, having a few sites makes it an appealing option.

I must admit I tried back in November, but didn't really know where to start. I went with Goscomb, but having only ever used 1and1 shared hosting (I know everyone says a terrible choice) I gave up after a couple of months having wasted a few hundred quid. Maybe I should give it another go but try a bit harder :D

To be honest until now I've only ever built sites from scratch so never dealt with any bloated CMS. The only reason I'm looking for something new is the fact WP seems so slow when so many other WP sites run smoothly.

I am tempted to bite the bullet and give it another go. Could do with a complete idiot's guide though.

I'll pm you some stuff in next few days with some contacts mate. I'm just out on my phone at minute.

Cheers

I'd really appreciate that. Maybe with some guidance I'll get it working this time. Cheers mate.

I have a VPS ..which you are more that welcome to come and test/try out..

Nothing but good things to say about tsohost.

Thanks for the recommendation, looks like some pretty good packages. Hopefully without sounding too thick though, what would the benefits be in a VPS over cloud hosting as offered by tsohost, or vice versa?

Thanks for the offer, I'd really appreciate taking a look (so long as I wouldn't be able to break anything :()

It's funny how after 6 years of working online I'm realising that I actually know very little about hosting/servers etc. Time to learn me thinks!

I've tried a few and found heart internet to be reliable, although a little more expensive than others. I've also not had any issues with tsohost and very cheap.
