What stats do you all look for when buying a domain? I am thinking of adding more to the site but was wondering how you research.

Depends on what im looking for in that particular domain but would be nice to see the following to cover all eventualities.

Reg Date , Global searches, Exact searches, average CPC, Majestic Backlinks, Majestic Referrers, Trust flow, Authority, Alexa Rank , Dmoz Listed.

These days I think more about if it is something I could develop or do a bit of speculating on whether if it is something that might be popular in the future.

I recently reg'd 'implantables' , the next thing after 'wearables' (apparently) , no stats but potentially good for traffic and possible ecommerce/resale when the tech develops. Might amount to nothing but worth a punt.

I still like a good EMD, (not where a brand would work better) even though they have been devalued recently in the eyes of Google, but if used on a well built site with good content I think it still makes a positive difference.

I don't really buy to sell though, more speculation and for the dev pile.

I assume we're talking about dropping domains

The only two things I look at really are reg date and domain authority (which I will then go look into independently) and maybe then glance at the tag

^ I only look at the reg date because most of the good dropping domains were registered in the 90s, not for "age"

Aren't a lot of metrics just there to seem fancy; I suppose you have to give people what they want, bells and whistles, even if they are pointless.

Dmoz Listed

I used to be dmoz editor, I remember when people would give sooo much weight to a listing on there

Rob, you cover them all, though your DA/PA's are usually out of date, you have domains showing when searching for set character lengths (some are zero), and often CPC/search results are not shown. Perfect them and your system will be even better than it already is. Well worth the £15/month in my view.

da/pa is checked I think 3 times during the 60 days - to check the entire dropping database every day would use several million checks a month and my subscription fee would have to be way higher. If there is an update at moz between those it's not always guaranteed to update. cpc/search have to be done manually - I try to do them every few days. I'm not sure what you mean about character lengths - there are no incorrect character lengths in the database as it's just a simple character count.

da/pa always seems to have changed by the time I check it, and that is normally at 60 days, but with changes in searches per month at moz, I rely more on that aspect of your system now.

In terms of length, there is a reoccurring problem daily, sorry I haven't had chance to email you about it. Take tomorrow for example, enter 3 for "Domain Length to" brings up these:

andygough.co.uk
eagletree.co.uk
skiphirepros.co.uk
souldeepdesigns.co.uk

Because they are set to DTL of 0. The way around it of course is setting 3 for 'from' too.

HTH's.

Thanks I will look into it.
Just as an example though if I check all the dropping database at moz once per day through the dropping cycle that would be 10million checks per 60 days - ie 5 million rows per month - now look at the cost of 4 million rows per month at https://moz.com/products/api/pricing ;) You can see how much more the price would have to be and that's not an option for anyone.

Yep, the pricing from moz is truely madness!

What stats do you all look for when buying a domain? I am thinking of adding more to the site but was wondering how you research.

If I'm assessing it manually, I start with the GKT and then look for things like how many companies (can I find) with that exact keyphrase in their title (intitle: modifier) in the UK, and how many of them use it in the title of their HOMEpage. Does it also show up on their visible homepage? (For example: "We are a leading company in the _________ market" or similar phrasing)

Does the keyphrase show up in tweets? Recent ones? Does it show up in Twitter profiles? Does it show up in Google News stories. Is the Google Trends rising, static, falling or off-the-chart low.

When you Google the keyphrase, does it start to appear as part of a longer URL in many results. So for example do you see results with URLs like ________company.co.uk or _________services.co.uk or PLACENAME_______.co.uk where you own the __________?

All of these can be clues that there's the potential for a sale, somewhere down the road.

A bigger font means the information won't fit very well - it's pushing it as it is to get all the info on a HD screen at full width. Can you not just use ctrl + (apple +) to increase the zoom for the page?

Make it a configuration option? I don't show most of the columns that are available.
