Lets say you have a site which stocked 1000 items for people to browse and purchase.

If your stats were showing you customers loved item A and bought loads of it but no-one ever bought item B, would you;

A) Spend your time promoting item A and wring every last ounce out of it

or

B) Assume that sales levels of 'A' would stay the same and spend your time promoting 'B' to try and get some of that market also?

I would wring every last ounce out of A and find a C to rival A. B has shown it has overstayed it's welcome.

The easy answer is to focus on milking A. However, I would suggest it is worth trying to understand why they buy A and why they don't buy B. Is it something to do with the comparative positioning/nature of the product itself (such as price, quality, scarcity, features, specialisation or resale value) or is it something different about the way it is advertised/marketed (such as terminology, imagery, delivery timescale or P&P) ? Crudely, to summarise, is it down to the product or is it down to you ?

Thank you both.

I would like to have the site running at full capacity, where every item is a potential purchase. I feel that the price issue may be the easiest area to look at first, so I will see if I can formulate a spreadsheet with the number of sales across the whole board and see how this correlates against the price of the item.
