I've read that there is an ecommerce plugin for Wordpress - has anyone had any experience using it? Is it any good? Easy to install? What are the limitations?

I have only just started using Wordpress for cms but have a site coming up where the customer is likely to need an ecommerce plugin adding for selling pottery.

I was wondering whether it is worth exploring the Wordpress route for this?

Can't speak for wordpress but joomla had virtuemart that is very easy to use.

2 I know of wordpress are wp-ecommerce and shopp (http://shopplugin.net/). I have a licence for shopp.

The code base for shop as well imo is more solid. There's a showcase on their site.

The simple answer is yes. However I would look at other solutions as WordPress is great for a lot of things but won't be as robust as some other dedicated ecommerce solutions.

I would recommend looking at shopify and magento as alternatives to WordPress.

Have a look at PremiumPress.com too, they have a few ecommerce templates.

Seconded for sure, I've used these on a couple of sites n and they are excellent, support is second to none if you get stuck :D

Perfect for affiliate sites also as they have an auto import feature to grab products from amazon, ebay and many more.

In what ways is it not as robust? I've not yet done an ecommerce site so am keen to know the "wrinkles" to look out for.
Have just finished doing my first cms with Wordpress and - whilst it has lots of "wrinkles" that need workarounds, it was possible.

Wordpress is a good 'jack of all trades' and it can certainly do ecommerce. That said, if you have a lot of products, a proper e-commerce solution may well be a better fit to your requirements (e.g. Magento).

Wordpress has some good ecommerce themes, search for free "ecommerce wordpress themes" you will find some good ones which work like a charm.
