Some advice wanted please! 123-Reg support's response to this has been shamefull.

I purchased a domain 2 years ago privately for a few thousand £. Nominet transfer went ahead fine. Then transferred in to my 123-reg account, no prob.

Domain set to auto renew.

Fast forward to July 2014 and I notice a 'Post expiry renewal reminder' email telling me the domain expired 5 days ago. I also then see the earlier 28 day & 7 day emails, asking me to renew.

I thought oops I better login to renew. But the domain isn't there. So I contact support. They say the domain is in someone else's account and to I should seek legal action or mediation or send in photocopies of my passport.

I try and bring them back to reality and show them the nominet whois and also that I recieved the renewal reminders so how can the domain be in someone else's account. They deny that the domain was ever mine!

I contacted nominet who asked me to 'escalate it' with 123-reg. I tried again with 123-reg, they just referred me to the previous support ticket.

What are my options now?

Is the domain still showing your whois details?

What does the whois say about the registrant name? Is it still yours? A domain doesn't drop for ~3months after expiry.

If it's still in your name then you can change registrars through Nominet.

If it's not in your name then there's something wrong with this timeline...

What's the domain .uk domains usually take 90 days in total to expire

Yes it's a .co.uk and still shows my details in the nominet's own whois. It still shows as owned by me when I log into nominet.

Which registrar do you guys suggest I move to? I have around 100 .co.uk domains to manage. Vidahost?

I'd recommend Daily.co.uk. If you can log into your Nominet account then it's easy enough to do the registrar release. Just create a daily account and go through their 'transfer in' process. Will cost £12 to do the release to another registrar process via Nominet.

Screw 123-reg. Just remove your payment details or they'll try to charge you for renewal then swear blind they've actually done it!

If that's the case they really are bloody idiots

I used to recommend domainmonster but there now owned by the same people as 123-reg

I have hosting with vidahost there support as always been good.

Consider webhosting buzz as well the owner is on here a fair bit.

You could also consider becoming a Nominet member yourself if you have more names in the £xxxx range.

Its about £700 to setup and £120 a year but you can renew at cost and your dealing directly with the registry if something was to go wrong.

in the mean time speak to whoever you plan to move to and make sure they will renew the name without stupid charges

To limit the risk of losing it through expiration or to another owner, pay the £12 and transfer it to another registrar through Nominets system if you still have access to it. I'd recommend daily.co.uk too; be careful of some others, plenty like 1-2-3 reg out there.

You're all cool then, never mind the the idiots at 123

As people say above pay the £12 and move it to another registrar

I've had no problem with TSOHost

You can ring them up a lot easier and talk to someone than you can at 123

Ok thanks for the help

Will transfer it via nominet. Will move everything else away from 123-reg to vida and daily.

123reg are a nightmare. I had a domain with them for that for God knows what reason I couldn't renew. Thankfully Nominet were very understanding and delayed the drop date giving me time to sort it out.

Recently I realised that I still own a .me that I registered years ago through 123 reg. Weird thing is it's not under my account and as far as I know I've never been charged renewal fees for it.

It's a crap domain too, wouldn't mind getting rid :p

It's been a long time since we last heard about some horror story involving 123.
I knew this wouldn't last.
Does that mean the domain expired and was allocated to somebody else's account ?
