Dragons Den Tonight 9PM New Series

You would think a technology expert Peter Jones would have for seen the extra traffic the site was going to have and get adequate hosting sorted out.

People just don't think about these things...look at what happens when SmashingMag tweets links on Twitter. About half the time the site goes down instantly, and they still don't warn the site owners that they're going to tweet about them, even though they've been asked to.

Thought it was very funny when Peter said "I can't believe she's got the .com"

Peter obviously has a keen eye for a great domain name.

missed the show yesterday and logged on this morning to see two pages of posts on it - must have been good. won't bother reading the posts till i catch up on iplayer tonight ;)

Snap. iplayer saves the day!

I can see ThePresentClub being turned into a big 'Christmas Hamper' site, where people pay in a monthly amount, like savings stamps, and then get a load of vouchers at Christmas.

It just seems like an idea that will fit in well with the current economy

And £60k is hardly a large amount, they'll probably get that back easily with all the Dragon's Den publicity.

I would have thought there is legislation to take into account as the concept is effectively a savings club. Would deposits need to be ring fenced in the event of the business failing ??

I believe you are correct after the Farepak Hamper case all deposits need to be ring fenced in the event of the business failing

Me and my mates were laughing like hell when he said that, his facial expression was brill :D

Lol, just watched this bit. Can't believe they actually thought it was a good idea to invest in that!

I didn't understand why she was bothering to do anything for 6%. That's the same as an affiliate would get from Amazon if they had at least 50 sales a month (which she better have otherwise the business is dead in the water) and Amazon's prices were better on a few products I chose and compared at random...
It's funny you say that; I had a similar idea to her website a few months ago however, instead of dropshipping the products I was thinking of comparing prices with affiliate links :)

See, now that's an actual service. Cheaper prices AND group buying...

To be fair I think Peter was more saying that it was great she had the initiative to get the .com rather than thinking the domain name was great. For him it will certainly be a bonus if they are looking to expand the business in the future.

Didnt think it was a great idea though...

She doesn't own the code, she's dependent on her developer, it's easy to replicate, Amazon could kill it in seconds, she's someone who has no clue about her own website let alone websites in general, it's much cheaper to do an affiliate version and potentially that has bigger margins and less hassle, it doesn't need £60k of investment, presentclub.com is for sale and I'm willing to bet it's less than £60k...anything I missed?

At 6% commission, they would need £1m of sales just to get the £60k back and that's before tax, overheads, salaries etc.

The basic idea is very good even if her business plan isn't.

With four kids, we got sick of;

a. having to buy 3 or 4 presents a month
2. our kids getting 20 crap presents when they have a party

One mum broke the silence a few years ago and said instead of buying presents, Billibob want to save up for a...(something he actually wanted) so now we just give cash.

LOL, nope.

I was amused when she couldn't even tell the new fiery dragon what the backend was written in, talk about unprepared...

Who cares what programming language the backend was written in? Thought that was a stupid question, or that the dragon who asked that was trying to come accross like she knew what she was on about.. And like Peter rightly said a bit later on, those issues about backend/etc were a moot point..
But yes the woman definitely stumbled on alot of points..

It gives an indication (if nothing more than an indication) that the pitcher has an insight into the technical implementation side of the business. If she's just abdicated ALL responsibility to the web dev firm then that's another sign she could be overpaying for stuff and/or has no clue about the backend.

There are many website operators who have no idea about the technical aspects of a website. Do you think most company owners give a damn what language their website is built with ? They pay someone in that field to do what is required. Its a bit like expecting a high street retailer to know what type of bricks or cement was used on the building, it is not that important to them.

Ok - how would the indication of insight into technical stuff help a dragon make an offer?
