IoT has arrived at the car park!

I know i've mentioned it before, as it was mentioned in another blog post, but I just stumbled on this one by Nom, to say that IoT has now been installed in their car park.

I love car parks (sad I know), and the technology that can be used behind them, to monitor and inform not only the motorist, but also the operators. When linked in with time ticket parking, the stats you can get are really geeky.

However, this Nom system looks useless from the blog post, as appears to do what other system currently out there do. Unless I really missed something, this adds nothing.

Anyway, when (if) Noms H&S advisor reads this YOU SHOULD BE FIRED. When using a battery powered angle grinder gloves and safety specs should be worn as a minimum. Plus when working in traffic areas, even if cones are out, high visibility clothing should also be worn. Having a pic of someone doing the exact opposite in the blog post just shows how little attention was paid to Health and Safety.

This has been discussed quite a bit on the Nominet forum, and the short version is that these pilot projects help Nominet prepare for the IoT - which it wants to have/will have a key role in enabling.

Personally, I'm happy that R&D in this area is relevant to Nominet's role in UK internet infrastructure.

I also accept that it's reasonable for Nominet to expand beyond domain names into relevant internet infrastructure projects, providing that they do not fund that expansion by taxing registrants (which is what is happening at the moment).

It absolutely won't have a key role. It's free to wish for anything it likes, but they're just as likely to magic up dragons or leprechauns as they are a leading position in the IoT race.

There has/will be £billions poured into the IoT in the form of VC investment (and the US-based companies will get the lion's share). Nominet's own efforts are a rounding effort compared to that. Even with their naked money grab (price rise/.uk) it's not going to make a shred of difference - they're still a tiny fish in a massive ocean. And the bigger IoT gets, the more investment money will "chase" it and the smaller Nominet's contribution will become.

Basically they're like sporting hobbyists trying to play in the pro leagues - can't be done. Sure, you can win a game or two, treat yourself to better oranges for half-time. But sooner rather than later the reality will catch up: you're just not that good. And you'll never be that good, because you don't have the means to be.

Maybe the H & S advisor had already explained all this to the workman, which might explain why there's a missing broom handle.

Think I might invent a sensor that you put in the entrance to a car park to determine occupancy of spaces. Wonder if there are any companies out there stupid enough to invest, oh hang on, I have an idea.

Must be really great to be able to pour millions of pounds of other people's money into a hobby. Shame they're wasting their time - at least not their own money.

Exactly my original point :

Registrar (nominet by all acounts as the monopoly for all .uk) - registrar activities - funding by domain sales or DRS etc.

A.N.Dopey Company - anything you want activities - funding by means not relating to the monopoly you have on domains!

Really? Wow...

As far as I care - "Nominet's role in UK internet infrastructure." should be managing and selling effing domains with some input to the 'Internet' from a research focus, that relates to domains and internet traffic to those domains.

Anything else they want to do they can feck off and do through a completely separate company, with it's own funding/investors money. Not just syphoning off money here and there that has been generated from domains under their control.

Nominet should have little or no real say in the infrastructure of the one thing that gives them their monopoly with no real governence.

That's a separate issue. I absolutely reject the minimal justification shared by Nominet for the price rise.

Funding their R&D through a 300% increase in domain registration costs is offensive.
