Japanese Earthquake

Bloody hell, an earthquake that measured 8.9 on the Richter scale, followed by a 10mtr tsunami currently moving inland. This'll turn out very bad as the day unfolds.

Terrifying to watch - seeing cars getting engulfed when trying to outrun it...I can't imagine the fear they felt. Very sad.

The Japanese tsunami comes just days after the Internet was awash with warnings that the movement of the moon will trigger tidal waves, volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.

Some claim that on March 19 - a week tomorrow - the moon will be closer to Earth than at any time since 1992, just 221,567 miles away, and that its gravitational pull will bring chaos to Earth.

I do think things in general will get worse here on little old earth :sad: it's so much more powerful than us!

I used to live about an hour West from Sendai - can't get in touch with people I know there and I know Yamagata-shi felt more than just a tremor!!

8.9 (if that's what it turns out to be is about 70 times greater than the Chile earthquake... )

Thank god that Japanese construction has been designed for this for quite a while as woudl have raised most tower blocks otherwise.

Perhaps you were thinking of me? I lived in Tokyo for 15 years (and mentioned it on here a number of times), but we moved back to the UK last summer. My wife's family is still in Japan, but we were finally able to reach them after calling for a long time, and they were shaken but otherwise ok.

The wider picture is however very, very grim, especially in northern Japan. The Japanese TV channels have suspended all regular programming, and some are streaming via uStream so we've been watching constantly.

There are still fears of more tsunami, and powerful aftershocks (e.g. a 6.4 magnitude just literally minutes ago). This is sadly going to turn out to have been a VERY VERY major disaster.

BTW, it's nearly all in Japanese, but Google Japan has put together a series of info pages including a People Finder tool, if anyone's concerned about friends or relatives

Edwin - couldn't agree more... a lot of the northern areas outside of the major cities are farming - so flat and susceptible to the Tsunami sweeping across.

Glad to hear family ties are all ok though...

Japan has been expecting a big one (I studied geological oceanograhpy at Uni) for quite a few years and the fear is this is NOT it...

The way the subducting plate drops (rather than simply pulling part) from memory means this could just be a smaller release of pressure whilst the big one is building (which could by the way be another 50 years off).

All very scary and unpredictable...

Also hope no one here is in Hawaii.... the natural shallowing of waters leading in to the reef and land mass that Hawaii sits on will increase the size of the Tsunami... hold on tight..... I think it will be around 3 - 5am Hawaii local time depending on how quickly the Tsunami travels due to swell and currents etc.

I hope things will turn out ok for the folks you know. If you know their contact info you may be able to use the Google tool to enquire about them and/or check whether they've reported themselves as being safe via the services being set up by the various mobile phone carriers (links to the latter are also on Google's page)

Thanks Edwin I will... I am sure they will be fine... there's some big hills between the two cities... so as long as their house was ok I am sure the Tsunami will not be the trouble as they don't live at the end of a valley that would channel the water!!

Well, with the number of aftershocks it's not very surprising. And one of the earthquake experts just predicted a "high likelihood" of a magnitude 7+ earthquake recurring within a month because of the stress to the faultline caused by the mega-quake...

i feel very sorry for them but no surprise it's happening
it will always happen becuase of their geography, we know that much

what does amaze me is the very intelligent Japanese people keep building nuclear power station on top of nuclear power station on top of so many fault lines
they had that one in Kashiwazaki, the worlds largest! i believe that shut down after a major quake in 2007 and now this just in at another nuclear plant

i know they are at forefront of 'earthquake proof' buildings and theyre doing their best on that front

The level of devestation is frightening. The UK has it's issues but thank God we don't (normally) get subject to such things as this.

I'm praying for those caught up in it.

Tsunami hitting all the west coast of America
Square miles of land and sea on fire.
8000 x more powerfull than the recent Christchurch quake.

Wouldn't be suprised to see a death count of 50k

Never seen anything like it, it's like Armegeddon.

Been following this all day on the netbook in uni. Now I'm back home and can see the news on the telly really brings home the devastation just hope to god the vast majority of people in them towns were evacuated in time.
