With the New Years honours list being released again, i just can not understand why highly paid professional sportsmen are rewarded for doing a job that they are richly rewarded for anyway.
Don't get me wrong, i like Rory Mcllroy and Darren Clarke as golfers and Darren Clarke has been through a hell of a lot and come through the other side , but really what have they done to deserve this?, they won a major tournament in golf ,hardly changing the lives of others or some scientific break through that will enhance the lives of others.

Another annual event which gets me is "sports personality of the year"
Shouldn't they drop the personality bit? especially when the likes of andy murray is nominated.

New Years Honours list is submitted by Politicians as far as I am aware so they try to get associated with famous people and are frankly a lot more political than the ones that come out In June (Birthday Honours). Which are chosen by the Palace and tend to be more regular people.

The irony...... :D

agreed all bollocks

I really am a grumpy old man :)

all that backslapping and titles and awards bollocks gets on my tits

Ha Ha, yeah me too, 38 years old and forever being grumpy, shouting at the TV and cynical beyond my years.
Not one for all these honours nonsense anyway but certainly not for multi millionaire sportsmen.

My dad was awarded an OBE in 2010 for services to education. Never really paid much attention to it before then.

2011 was enough to turn anyone fecking grumpy... though I was already firmly established.

Here's to a less grumpy 2012!! Even years tend to be better... more events to take our mind off things.

Loads of cynics on here this morning!

There is a very involved system for awarding honours - and most do go to ordinary members of the public and are nominated by the public. If you are interested in knowing how it works then have a look at - http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Governm...UKgovernment/Honoursawardsandmedals/DG_067909

Stephen.

yeah I guess the Preddie family must have turned out in numbers at the voting

not that I recognise titles or letters after names or silly things like that, but surely if you have them you don't give the 'top' ones to a 24 year old who was a drug dealer and mugger etc just a few short years before
It's reminds me of z list celebrities like Jordan who are on like their 3rd autobigraphy or something lol and they haven't done anything except get their tits out and be a media whore

humph grumph
:)

A quote from Frederick the Great of Prussia: 'Medals are for fools. Great men just need their names.'

Most awards are favour based these days, I reckon 4 out of 5 recipients get it because they've done favours for others in powerful or influential positions.

The reality is that these honours should only be awarded to those who have done deeds well beyond their normal duties, or to those who perform heroic acts, whether military or civilian.

New Years honours list

Load of b0ll0cks... what fecking British Empire... and who cares about sports stars, movie stars etc. They are all paid handsomely to do their 'job' so stop giving them silly bragging rights...

Check out Declining a British honour...

A lot more respect for people like Bowie, Cleese, Stephen Hawking etc. who turned them down, but none for people like Sir V. S. Naipaul or even Alfred Hitchcock who at first declined honours, and then take one that is more important (e.g. KBE) a few years later...

Nuff said.
