Pagerank and dropping domains...

Hi guys.

Just a quick question. As far as I'm aware, when a .com with PR drops/deletes it's existing PageRank is lost. Is this the same case with .co.uk that as soon as they are deleted they lose their existing PR?

Just did an experiment last week where I registered a PR5 .co.uk domain that had expired. Now it is pointing at my name servers (no site up) but still shows PR5 using page rank checker tools. So the answer is yes, it does retain PR, but not permanently. Will let you know how long it holds for.

An interesting aside is that this was a case of PR-spoofing, where the original owner used a little-known trick involving redirecting Google bots using .htaccess to fool people into seeing a higher PR. It even fools most of the PR checkers.

This is most often used when people are selling established web sites, to make them appear more popular. Fraud, really. Anyone buying a domain/site based on PR must always check for PR spoofing, there are a couple of sites out there you can use, just Google it.

The fact that this experiment found a case of PR-spoofing should make no difference to the answer to your question.

I've had a pr3 ranking on a couple of dropped .co.uk for 6 months, not gone up or down and just a blank holding page.

Then there is the Toolbar PR which is the one that gets displayed, this is an indication of PR at some point in history maybe 3 or 4 months out of date.

Just because the Toolbar says it has (X)PR it doesn't mean that the real PR is the same, it may have already gone to 0 in the real Google PR

To check spoof page rank sites I use http://www.sem-faq.com/fake-pagerank-checker.php

Can't tell whether it uses current Google data, but it susses out those pesky PR spoof domains

to demonstrate, type in this PR5 domain: numeroeurope.co.uk

Is there a way of checking "the real one"?

There is no way to find out a sites real PR score but there are some sites out there that attempt to guess it, don't ask me where tho cos it's not something I bother with.

For me the best way to gauge a sites strength is to, first look at it's toolbar PR then do some searches for what that site is trying to score for. If it scores well I make a judgment on how much I trust the PR score.
