hi guys, I was wondering - has anyone bought nominet membership of somebody?

.. I would be interested to become nominate member, but would like to skip that hefty £400 joining fee :) .. at the same time - there must be people who cancel their memberships for different reasons :?

I had a telephone conversation with nominet and they said that in theory it is doable.

any thoughts? thank you in advance, Helmuts

I guess in theory you could, however, as the membership is only a couple of average quality domain sales or part of a decent sale and you get a clean slate, no baggage of the old account owner. Assuming you are linked to the site in your signature, then as a Ltd company you'd offset the costs against your corp tax so it would be cost neutral.

@monaghan thank you for your reply.

.. is it possible to get a Nominet membership with negative baggage? .. what do I have to look for?

I know what you are getting at, but the purchase wouldn't be cost neutral, but certainly a 20% offset. A separate 20% if VAT registered too.

:) well, I'm not at that level where I have the luxury of trying to save money on taxes.. I tend to spend all the money I make :) .. after I pay wages, of course :)

so, I have to shop around after all the money is spent on domains or on my desire to shoot videos.

You can't buy a Nominet membership from someone else just as you can't buy a golf club membership from someone else. It's non transferable. Source: a recent conversation with Nick Wenban-Smith, senior legal counsel at Nominet.

hmm.. I had a chat with a nominet tech advisor over the phone and he said that it can be done.. It was something like: old member requests a membership transfer by email and the new one confirms the email.. something like that :/ .. but thank you for that information - I will double check it anyway :)

Did they think you were asking about transferring a domain?

You can buy a business, where the nominet membership is part of said business and membership is updated, this is the same process as if you change your business name.

I can't remember how much nominet charge, but another member on his was changing the account from a family members name into his own name, there were a charge and some paperwork needed.

Some years ago I transferred my Nominet membership from myself personally to my limited company.

Nominet were fine with me doing this.

Not quite the same circumstances as selling it from A to B but a transfer nonetheless.

I enquired about similar recently, asking if I could transfer my tag member from my limited company to my personal account and they said it would be possible, so I can't see this being any different.
