will it improve performace if the mtu packet is kept under 1500?

someone must know?

If you send large packets over links that can't support them, they may get fragmented and have to be re-assembled at the far end. If you're worried about it try a path MTU discovery (PMTUD) to find networks that your packets won't fit down.
