Do you think Nominet will ever release the reserved LL.co.uk's?

As a domainer what would you pay to own a LL.co.uk?

Who would run the auction, who would profit from it, why should the person with the deepest pockets get the name? What about Nominet's not for profit / first come first served rules?

Nominet. Nominet. That's how the world goes around. Would be better than them being dropped and released to the public pool for registration. Would imagine the dominant catches getting a bulk of them if that happened.

I think that they should just randomly release one every month. No idea which name. No idea which day. No idea which time.

That means that A N Other punter could concievably stumble upon it.

Drop catchers would use up their DAC quotas scanning all 2 letter combos every day (although he list would get shorter, I grant you), so that would mean that a certain number of regular drops would get picked up by others or left for the general public.

Edit; in fact, to add another random factor, don't gaurantee to make one available every month even. So you could watse your DAc check on nothing for an entire month.

I believe it has been looked at a few times in the past, and the stumbling block is *how* to release them that is fair to all.

Why is that better than first come first served, I am sure many catchers here would disagree. Likewise those who manually reg, it would be very unlikely that they would nab a LL.co.uk but stranger things have happened.

Would people like Nominet in direct competition with their business? ie. entering the secondary market , and auctioning competition for Sedo or others?

If Nominet auction UK.co.uk for a million thats hardly not for profit, and there is already uproar about their cash pile so growing it would not the worlds greatest idea.

Then you have the people with TM's etc who believe they ought to have the names. See VW.de case for what might happen.

Not practical really. Several hundred names at one per month would be 58 years to release them all.

Nominet could hold the sell off and give the proceeds to charity, if they wish to maintain the mantra of "not for profit".

Dropping them is an option, but as I've said most will be caught automatically by drop catchers and not through hand registrations.

TM's - That would be up to the new owner to shoulder, through DRS or court proceedings. If you wish to take a punt on names like; ge and vw so be it.

Yes a month might be too long; maybe a week, or a random 3 day period. Maybe more than one gets dropped. As long as it's random, then DAC users have the choice of risking their lookups on something that may or may not drop.

They could always auction them and then put the funds into a high interest bank account that they are not allowed to withdraw original + inflation from, but only interest on top of the inflation, and that money from that used to help cover their costs.

If each LL.co.uk sells for average of £20k (I recon on average it would be much higher) then thats £13.5million. That means they'd get around £500,000 a year from that in interest after interest covering inflation is put back into bank account. Although for nominet that's probably peanuts - how many million .uk domains at £2.50 plus vat a year.... I really can't see how they can spend what must be over £10 million a year in revenue...
