General question - What are the benefits of having your own TAG?

I know there are some Nominet costs but are the reg fees much cheaper than say, 123-REG.

Do you have to have some special software to use it?
What number of domains would make it worthwhile?

Any pointers would be appreciated
Thanks
Sean

Do you have to have some special software to use it?

You need to be able to send signed PGP encrypted e-mails, there is free software available to do this.

Benefits are general ease of management of your domains. It's more reliable than using another company to reg domains.

Another benefit is you can try to drop catch domains (specialist scripting and servers required, this is pretty difficult now).

So, does that mean that by having your own tag, you can buy your domains straight from Nominet at a reduced rate, rather than buying from a registrar like 123-reg for £6.88, and what are the reg fees tag holders pay?

Thanks for that info.

What about the charges, how much cheaper would .co.uk domains be instead of using another company like 123-REG. Is there much difference?

OK, so you save about £1 per domain, need to have enough regs to pay for the nominet fees.

I've heard about the PGP email system, is there no online way of registering etc?

Having a tag does not let you buy discounted domains, you need to be a member also for that.

Tag holders can buy domains directly from Nominet at £90+ vat

I have a tag for security reasons and to ensure I can renew my domains with whatever registrar is cheapest/easiest to use at the time.

Having my own tag also makes buying domains a lot easier, as I can just change the admin contact on a domain, log into Nominet and transfer the domain myself, to myself ;)

It also looks good to perspective buyers.

I would think most people on here have a tag. If they haven't then I would be really surprised.

www.dacpanel.co.uk - Chris has an site that enables you to 'mess about' with your domains for £10 a month

How does this work?
I thought the registrar always used their own tag?

1 - Domain on your tag is due for renewal

2 - Change tag on domain to say, 123-REG

3 - Add domain to your 123 account and pay the renewal

4 - Change tag back to your own.

Job done.

Thanks

I apologise if this is a dumb question.

So I have a domain on my own tag. Does the Nominet system allow DNS entries so I can allocate nameservers to use for hosting etc?
