Hmmm I dunno... there needs to be a balance. I'm the kind of numpty that searches for something on forums and comments only to find its a thread from 2001 because I never check dates

I've never understood the reticence to resurrect old threads. Surely if the information is still relevant and people want to continue to discuss it, why not? If we search and find an old thread but can't post to it, should we make a new thread and wait to be told to use the search engine?
I agree with the idea of a beginner's sticky as a lot of the appraisals turn out to be personalised tutoring that just gets repeated. Surely it's worthwhile explaining that if you aren't sure if something is valuable then it's probably not, and how that's different to knowing something is valuable but not to what degree.
I like it here it but the majority of posts lately seem to be newbs coming in thinking their sdofgihsoo.co.uk is worth £30,000 and people belittling them for that opinion. I see both sides of the argument there but the attitude is not conducive to people wanting to stay and learn. It risks becoming an elite club when there are only those who think they know it all (and probably do) but seem to relish showing the newbs their place.
I came here as an amateur with an interest in affiliate marketing who understood the power of a good domain name, and I really appreciate the wealth of knowledge that is available from some of you. Forums do change though and I think it would help to perhaps provide a quick start guide to domaining and a little less attitude towards newbs.

People were getting annoyed at new members commenting on old threads. I've double how long they now stay open for (to 60 days) and I do manually re-open others when members have asked me to.

Appraisals are fine IMHO - I mean if you own a name or two, and its .uk then Acorn ought to be the place to ask.
Most issues seem to lie with people posting rubbish .coms or, getting narky when told they are TMs / worthless etc.
Thats the 'problem' to solve, not to expect someone with old.co.uk to make 50 posts to be told its worth a few grand.

It's occured to me that maybe members expect too much from the forum.
I find I never derive any bad from it and I have found I've derived a lot of good.
Within both ends of the spectrum Fagend to Edwin there is something to be gained and learned, and the forum is still the same, it's just other things that have changed.
And there are bulls and bears ( buyers & sellers ) all doing what suites them to get what they want ( someone will report a name to be crap because he wants to buy a similar one at a knock down price ) and that will vary, and the pendulum will swing in different peoples favour, depending on the position of the cycles we all deal within.
I find I never derive any bad from it and I have found I've derived a lot of good.

To throw my hat in - I love this forum and have learned so much on here. From buying my first domain name 'chlimidia co uk' and expecting the typo riches to come in, to buying on domainlore and flipping to end users for 4 times the price, there is no way I would have done it without this forum. In particular reading wisdom from the likes of Frank and Edwin and studying the domain lists of the likes of Brassneck and getting great ideas. And it would not be possible without Admin, who runs the whole show very well.
I admit I've risen to the bear bait on recent appraisal threads, but that is because seeing a lack of humility really angers me, and having taken an open route to learning from other people on here, I can't stand watching others not doing the same and taking a superior approach with no experience whatsoever. Those threads definitely need to die a death, but I do agree the 50 plus rule can lead to spam - I'd hate to board full of 'I agree with this' type nonsense just so someone can get their count up.
I think things are generally fine with the board, it's just how the economy is that is making it more of a scrap. A4U declined hideously because suddenly everyone was being more secretive about their methods and 1000 affiliate managers were trying to promote their free delivery voucher code. The same thing will not happen here if time wasting posters are correctly managed and good people remain.
My only complaint would be the 'exclusive' section - I only joined in the last few months and can see there were good times on it back in the day, but now it is very quiet. if admin had the time/inclination to get some unique content in there, then it would be a much more compelling proposition.

Fully agree, other forums the mods 'actively' (not that admin doesn't) get involved in the threads, provide direction on the members banter to ensure all stays on topic etc.
i'm up for being a mod of the 'UK website for sale' section! vote for me and i'll ban excessive bumping
Yes some do put up stupid names at stupid prices (not just newbies though although one mans junk is another treasure) Do they keep doing so if no one buys, agrees with there valuation etc or get bored and go somewhere else..?
Is there some sort of add on automatic thread remover ? Say if a sale, appraisal thread etc had 5, 10 etc alerts it was automatically either removed, alerted a mod or sent to a sin bin ? possibly then the ones who this bugs most could donate a little each to have it installed thus creating peace and harmony throughout...?

There are multi login detectors, IP checkers and the like as well that can stop this kind of thing.
Incidently if that guys names/posts were deleted - why is this clown still active , multi user and selling stuff users have serious concerns over:

I think this is an excellent forum, way more useful than a4u, which to me is just a load of boards on affiliate networks and a hangout board of the whats your favourite car variety. I almost never bother with it. In fact I think you should try and get more a4u people on here, loads of them would find it useful. I have been on a4u since dec 05 and here since jan 10. I wish I had known about this place so much earlier. can you advertise this forum on there?
I read useful posts on here every day and there are 20+ regular posters who are hugely helpful.

As said before I appreciate this forum.
It SEEMS that the forum is used by a wide spread of people. Some are professional domainers pure and simple. Their knowledge and expertise are invaluable and maybe the level of discussion that they want to participate in is at a higher level than some of the rest of us.
Some other users are wannabe domainers - they maybe want to learn, maybe want to make a quick buck and in the end maybe will get somewhere
Some other users like myself have a wider range of interests which may include more peripheral stuff to "pure" domaining, like developing sites, using adsense, offering content for sale, affilaite sites, building sites etc for others as well as looking for the odd domain bargain and selling domains we no longer want.
My view is that all these are valid, however I appreciate that some people may want something much more oriented towards professional domaining.
On the whole, there is far less dross on this forum (eg trolls and spammers) than on many other forums I go on. I don't even go to the "appraisals" section and so probably miss some of the stuff that's been talked about here. So for me the message is "keep up the good work"
I do appreciate that running a forum is hard work and moderating a forum involves a time committment. If there were to be new moderators i would hope that they don't become power crazy as they can on some forums but that also the rest of us cut them some slack if we don't like what they are doing!
I also belong to webmasterworld which I find very helpful. They have a VERY strong, almost puritanical moderating policy. Whilst I think they go too far some times, at least it keeps the dross out!

I'd like to add my support for Acorn..... and the ever excellent admin!
In the 6 years I've been a member here, I've enjoyed the information, posts and general banter that occur on a daily basis.
People come and go, the market rises and falls, post 'quality' varies. Such is life.
The only thing I would recommend is that people are encouraged to be a little more polite sometimes... and those with an axe to grind... or think they know everything... try to control yourselves!
