How to remove the 'Powered by Wordpress' and theme credits

I've tried a few suggestions from Google to try and remove the footer from my website (the one in my sig) but none seem to work.

Don't you just go to your footer.php (whatever it's called) and then remove the bit of code with the links?

You can edit it from footer.php . Just go to Appearance/Editor -> footer.php and then search for
Powered by Wordpress in footer.php. You will get your solution
