Paypal suck

Well, our company won't be accepting Paypal as a payment option any longer.

For some unknown reason, despite having a business account with them for years, they've just put a block on it and they won't unlock it unless I upload a personal photo ID and proof of address.

Like many people, I'm cautious who I'll give a photo ID to, so I asked them to close the account down instead.

Grrr. So much red tape in this world these days!

Why anything other than a proof of business ID is required is beyond me.

I know they're terrible but I sometimes won't bother with a transaction if they don't take Paypal.
Or if I'm in two minds about trusting a site/company, I don't mind paying with Paypal where I wouldn't give out the credit card number.
The flipside of them treating businesses terribly is that as a customer you know they'll side with you...

Yes, as a punter I'd feel the same. Fortunately we rarely take Paypal payments as a business, so it's no big loss. And they're always a bit of an accounting pain in the neck too.

I currently have about 7 paypal accounts, 1 of them has thousands in it and is locked.

Must admit I am put off by companies which want a photo ID as verification, a couple of Forex/stock Trading companies want info like that so ended up using another brokerage platform. Not had it with Paypal yet though and I put quite alot through paypal a year. ( Although admittedly last year was significantly less as I've moved most transactions across to Stripe now ) .

like above though, there are some services I wouldnt enter my card details in and would only purchase if paypal is an option.

I don't like them too but they were a *lot* worse when they weren't correctly financially regulated. In those days they would close accounts with no rights and just basically steal your money. Now there are avenues of appeal for locked accounts - @Admin you should speak to a solicitor. Also if they go bust they are insured whereas before they weren't. Love Elon - hate paypal Sadly it's now almost impossible to get a merchant account here in Malta so there is not much alternative for me. Paypal at least bridges a gap. Hate how they stiff me on exchange rates though - you pay me in sterling, I withdraw in Euro, they add anything up to several % on top of the bank rate at their whim.

Business account as a uk ltd company or business account as sole trader?

If the latter, its quite possible they are being forced to do this to comply with money laundering regulations.

That seems way over the top to ask for photo id for a ltd company. Anyone else had same experience for a ltd company? perhaps they're going to start asking for this for all ltd companies.

Take a picture of the building your company is in and send that

They asked me for photo ID once on account of logging into my account when I went to the US. It took an age to sort out!

I’m pretty sure I had to provide my photo ID for an account in the name of a limited company. For some reason they also insist on having my personal address on the account.

PayPal is a bit of a ball ache, it’s expensive and our account manager is absolutely useless despite the amount of money we receive through it.

We tested different payment options on checkout and a Stripe/PayPal combo was a clear winner. Without the PayPal option our CR fell by over 40%. Annoying and expensive, but a necessary evil I guess!

Hi Martin, I have three online accounts for Business payments Payoneer, Paypal and Transferwise I had to provide ID for all even with Crypto exchanges sometimes they require 2 forms of ID so I think is pretty standard due to regulation. To mitigate risks I usually request them to delete my ID after verification where possible this way no risk to myself if their servers get hacked perhaps you can ask them to do the same and confirm in writing to ease your concerns?

Just a thought.

4 months of uploading documents and proving who I was, and finally PayPal have unlocked one of my accounts. Stupid thing is that three other company accounts i have which are registered to the same company address and me as the director went through in 48hours and without any issues. Go figure.

Ask them for a photo of the person requesting it...they're the ones holding YOUR money.

Every Tom, Dan and Harry asks for photo ID these days ........even an online pharmacy asked me recently for non-prescription med! I rarely give unless absolutely necessary. When it comes to financial institutions, you are very likely have to give it to them.
